Fall 2025 Update

South Dakota Athletes Looking to Build Strength with Beef Thanks to Nutrition Program

Student athletes from 47 South Dakota high schools and eight universities will benefit from the Build Your Base sports nutrition program for the 2025-26 school year.

The comprehensive sports nutrition program utilizes beef as its premier protein to prepare athletes and their families for a successful sports season through ready-to-use materials, best in class sports nutrition education and high-quality protein to support optimal performance.

Beef in the Classroom Experience Teaches Students the Benefits of Eating and Cooking with Beef

South Dakota Family and Consumer Science (FCS) teachers have access to resources available through the Beef in the Classroom Experience thanks to a partnership with South Dakota CattleWomen (SDCW) to enrich classroom curriculum with a focus on beef education. This initiative supports hands-on learning and industry-relevant content, helping students better understand:

  • Beef Cuts and Identification: Learn to recognize and classify various cuts of beef, their uses and value.
  • Preparation Methodology: Explore cooking techniques, food safety and flavor development.
  • Nutrition Education: Dive into the nutritional profile of beef and its role in a balanced diet.

This opportunity empowers educators to bring real-world agricultural knowledge into the classroom, fostering student awareness of food systems, culinary skills, and health literacy.

This year the program received 40 applications. Staff is currently reviewing applications and selecting schools to participate in the initiative that will begin after the first of the year.

Here is what schools are saying about the program:

“We appreciated SDCW and the Beef in the Classroom Experience providing financial resources to improve our teaching of beef in the classroom and the importance of using beef as a protein source. This program gives students opportunities to find beef recipes they think they will like and prepare. Thanks for making this possible!”
– Eureka School

“Students learned how to cook beef steaks, practiced preparing three different beef meals and learned how to safely and effectively cook ground beef. Our students demonstrated an improved understanding of meat preparation, including how to identify meat grain and why cutting against it improves texture. They showed increased confidence and independence in using kitchen tools, especially knives and frying pans. The lessons enhanced their understanding of the connection between food prep techniques and meal quality.
The students really enjoyed being able to learn how to make these meals in a fun environment and were excited
to share what they had learned with their families at home and gain more confidence.” – Sioux Falls Whittier Middle School

Beef in the 605 on National Stage at Sanford International

South Dakota beef brought a flavorful experience once again to the 2025 Sanford International PGA Tournament.

The Minnehaha Country Club in Sioux Falls, S.D. hosted top golfers and enthusiasts and showcased delicious beef at the annual event. Attendees could learn and taste the many benefits and flavors of beef as they enjoyed watching the best golfers in the world.

Beef Logic Inc., South Dakota Beef Industry Council and Jorgensen Land and Cattle partnered for this annual event. Beef’s presence has been a mainstay since the international tournament began in South Dakota several years ago.

In addition to Junior Beef Ambassadors serving as caddies at the tournament, an added highlight this year was for Huron High School Golfer Taylor Sorben, to serve as a caddy for professional golfer Scott Parel. Huron School District is a Build Your Base participating school. Build Your Base provides nutrition resources and education to help student athletes reach toward their peak performance with the benefits of beef as a premiere protein.

Collaborating to Further Our Mission of Promoting Beef

The opportunity Beef Logic Inc. gets every day to promote the benefits of beef with many different audiences would not be possible without our beef producers.

Beef Logic Inc. had the chance early this fall to thank some of those producers as Beef Logic Inc. led the Northeast Region Tour on behalf of the South Dakota Angus Association.

Collaborations like this allow us to further our mission of promoting the beef industry through consumer education while showcasing the exceptional operations and individuals who make it all possible. We’re proud to celebrate the dedication of our beef producers and grateful for the opportunity to be part of this journey.

Football Fans Score Big with Beef

Build Your Base, one of the programs of Beef Logic Inc., was on the Tailgate Tour this past college football season, celebrating the great taste of beef with several of our eight university partners.

In addition to lively tailgate competitions, “Tailgate Tips” was filmed with Holly Swee, Director of Nutrition and Avera Murdzek, a South Dakota State Nutrition & Dietetic graduate student to show how simple it was to create delicious beef recipes that are sure to score big with any tailgate crowd! Special thanks to MIDCO Sports and the South Dakota Beef Industry Council for their support in creating this broadcast experience!

Thanks to university partners Augustana, Black Hills State, Northern State, South Dakota State and South Dakota for your hospitality to Beef Logic Inc. We had a blast and plan to do more events with our university’s during the winter sports season.
